A tiny photograph has opened up another chapter in the charming story of ‘Charlie’, the 100-year-old ventriloquist’s doll, who has sparked much interest since he went on display at Pembroke Dock Heritage Centre this year.
It reveals that ‘Charlie’, originally owned by local entertainer Ernie James, had a friend. The picture shows the two male dolls with Ernie James with one of buses from Mr James’ Pioneer bus company.
The photo was given to Paul Elliott, now ‘Charlie’s’ owner, by Brian Pratt of Pembroke Dock.
Said Paul: “This is a fascinating discovery and I would love to know what the other doll was called. We are aware that Ernie probably had another doll called ‘Daisy May’ but now it looks like there was a family of dolls!”
As the mystery of ‘Charlie’ and friends deepens he calmly continues to survey the world from his display case at the Heritage Centre, where he will remain on view for the coming weeks.
Anyone with new information on ‘Charlie’ and friends is asked to contact the Heritage Centre on 01646 684220 or enquiries@pdht.org.
